Now the real expedition begins. Our Russian visas are finally finished, after 10 days of arguing with the russian embassy here in Kazakhstan, and alot of help from Peter, our Yekaterinburg-host. We have had two months of travelling already, but the next couple of months will bring us new challenges, challenges that we never have faced before. We’re finally on our way to the vast areas of Siberia. Kazakhstan will be left behind, and we will meet up again with the Russian roads.
The first 2000-4000 km, we will travel on an ordinary highway. Still, an ordinary highway in Russia isn't a good road. Slippery roads and old trailers are not a safe combination.
This area, with cities like Novosibirsk and Irkutsk, has an average temperature around -15C, normal Norwegian winter weather. We don't predict any problems on this stage. That is why we turn north on Lena highway, known as “Highway to hell”.
This road will take us a couple of thousand km through nothing, before we arrive at Yakutsk. Average temperature around -40C will meet us there, if the car makes it so far. The car has to run all the time; if it stops it will be almost impossible to start it again.
The road between Yakutsk and Magadan, M56, is known as road of bones. It's described as not traversable for ordinary vehicles. For a good descripton on the road, read up on it on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M56_Kolyma_highway_(Russia)
This will be the final stage before we try to get a boat to transport the car over to USA.
There is a small chance that we still try to get up to the bering-strait and cross over, but due to Russias emence Visa-bureaucracy, we are running short on time if we choose this alternative. We will make an absolute decision when we're in Yakutsk.
"Highway to hell" with temperature varying from -15-40C.. the irony of it all.
SvarSlettMarius: Before you cross the border, town boundary, state line or whatever, to Yakutsk. Can you please buy a horse, shove it in Yakutsk and throw the red dices?
